Single in the City of Light

By Lynda Sydney

Paris

Paris is known as the most romantic city in the world. We have all seen images of happy couples embracing on bridges and kissing passionately in front of famous monuments. But as a single woman who travels there often, I think Paris is the perfect place to be a single. For one thing, Paris is a safe city for solo females. A woman can travel alone in Paris day or night in almost any area of the city and feel safe.

You'll want to check out the many museums and must-see tourist sights. But what else can a single gal do?

Just walk. Paris is a wonderful walking city. The architecture is beautiful and in the city centre many of the major attractions are easily accessible on foot. But please - leave the sneakers, fleece and backpacks at home - you're in one of the world's most stylish cities, not hiking in the Himalayas! You can find comfortable footwear that is still fashionable.

Enjoy café life. One of my favourite Paris pastimes is finding a good seat in a bustling café and watching the world stroll by. You can stretch a café crème or kir out for hours - there are no signs that say "20 minute limit" as there are at home. Bring a book if it makes you feel more comfortable, but I bet you'll find yourself watching daily life unfolding before you.

Sip champagne. Who says champagne is only for couples? Visit the piano bar at The Ritz or George V hotel and order "une coupe de champagne". It's a bit pricey - about 25 euro for a glass - so this is definitely a special indulgence. Sit back, listen to the live music, and drink in the décor. You may even spot a celebrity.
